Botox and dermal fillers are the two most requested treatments in aesthetics, and they’re often talked about in the same breath — but they work in completely different ways and solve different problems. Understanding the distinction makes it much easier to know what to ask for at your consultation, or whether you actually need both.

What Is Botox (Anti-Wrinkle Injections)?

Botox is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes the small muscles responsible for expression lines. When a muscle can’t contract as strongly, the skin above it stops creasing every time you frown, squint or raise your eyebrows. It’s the go-to treatment for dynamic lines — the ones caused by movement, such as forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, and crow’s feet around the eyes.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are typically made from hyaluronic acid, a substance already found naturally in your skin. Rather than relaxing muscles, fillers add volume and support structure beneath the skin. They’re used to soften static lines and folds (the ones visible even when your face is at rest), restore volume lost with age, and enhance features such as the lips, cheeks or jawline.

Botox vs Filler: The Key Differences

Can You Have Both?

Yes, and many clients do. Botox and filler address different signs of ageing, so combining them, often referred to as a “liquid facelift” approach, can address movement-related lines and volume loss in the same treatment plan. Which combination makes sense, and in what order, is exactly the kind of thing we work through together at consultation.

Which Is Right for You?

As a general rule: if a line only appears when you move your face, Botox is usually the better starting point. If you’re noticing hollowing, lost volume, or lines that are visible even when your face is relaxed, filler is more likely to help. Many people benefit from a bit of both over time. There’s no substitute for an in-person consultation to assess your skin, your anatomy and your goals before recommending either.
